I keep annoyingly see people on various parts of the internet that I recognize from Tumblr say that Mary Crawley is just being reduced back to ~suitors and ~a love story, so I thought I would clear up these misconceptions spread by butthurt fans who tend to pick and choose what they want to hear from TPTB. From everything we’ve heard, Mary’s story will prove to be very central and versatile in series 4, perhaps the strongest yet for her character.
Per Fellowes in The Daily Mail, Mary will face guardianship issues, and will be largely taking on estate matters:
“Mary is back on her own, establishing her rights as the guardian of her baby son, fighting to get the estate through the dark days of the Twenties, struggling to re-find her own life.”
“I imagine Mary will not be able to move on very quickly. It will be very difficult to replace the love of her life. The thing is that for the third [season] Mary was largely happy and content and they got the money to save Downton. I find myself smiling more often as the character and my guess is that I will not being that smile again for awhile. I’m sure she won’t come out of mourning too quickly.”
Fellowes describes more of Mary having to protect her interests to the Belfast Telegraph (and several publications that circled this piece):
“Now Mary, having been very happy, is now having to fight her corner again and having to protect the interests of her child. In a way, that’s interesting dramatically.”
In discussing her romance down the line, Neame says to the DM that Mary will be a core focus of s4:
“Mary’s a catch, and her story will be the spine of the next series.”
Fellowes in the Telegraph discussing more of Mary’s bad ass-ness in s4:
“So now we’ve got Mary widowed, trying to control the estate, feuding with various other people about what the right way forward is, looking for a new life dare one say it. All of that is really more interesting than two people sitting by the fire having a cup of tea.”
Sounds like the shake-up in narrative can open up the possibilities on the show! Can’t wait, it all sounds very exciting.
